VimpelCom has promoted Alexander Vorobyov, financial director of Uzbekistan unit Unitel, to the position of CEO.
Vorbyov succeeds Andrey Safronyuk, who stepped down from the role on 9 January, the Russia-focussed operator said in a statement. Vorobyov has served as acting CEO of Unitel, which operates under the Beeline brand, in the interim.
The VimpelCom vice president of business development in the CIS region, Dmitry Kromsky, said he believes Vorobyov’s experience in Central Asian countries will enable him to develop a strategy for the unit that will contribute to Beeline’s further growth.
Vorobyov said one of his most important tasks will be to implement the next stage of Unitel’s network expansion.
The new CEO managed his own business before joining Russia’s largest mobile operator MTS in December 2005. He spent six years with the company before joining VimpelCom as financial director of Tajikstan unit Tacom in November 2011. He was appointed financial director of Unitel in August 2013.
