The Indian government has reportedly approved a proposal from state-owned operators BSNL and MTNL to sell their unused broadband wireless access spectrum back to the state for Rs110bn (US$1.8bn).
Information minister Manish Tiwari was quoted as saying that the move will help the revival of the companies, which had acquired the 4G spectrum in 2010 but never used it.
The decision follows a September 2013 agreement for the two to merge their networks as they battle to remain competitive in India’s crowded mobile market. Several options were previously considered to boost their revenues, including the sale of tower operations.
