Belarus has budged on the starting price for its majority stake in MTS Belarus, lowering it to US$863m.
The state property committee confirmed the new price today, a significant drop on the US$1bn figure the government previously asked.
The committee will accept bids for the state’s 51% stake in the mobile joint venture with Russian telco MTS until 5 February 2014. The selection process is set to take place the following day.
The initial US$1bn price tag was based on a 2010 market assessment. A second evaluation was recently conducted.
MTS, which owns the remaining 49% in the company, has previously said it would be interested in buying out the Belarusian government, but not for US$1bn. The telco has declined to comment on whether it will participate in the February auction.
