The Azerbaijan government has kick-started the process for merging state-owned telcos Aztelecom and Baktelecom ahead of a planned privatisation.
Communications and information technologies minister Ali Abbasov said proposals to transform the telcos into joint stock companies have been prepared, local newspaper Azernews reported.
Abbasov was quoted as saying the government plans to merge the operators into a single, state-owned joint stock company in 2014. The privatisation process is expected to begin shortly afterwards
The ministry intends to eventually privatise all telecoms companies under its control and act solely as a regulator, the report stated.
The state has stakes in several local mobile operators including Azercell, Catel and Aztrank.
