Bahrain’s Batelco said it would be interested in bidding for Orascom’s Algerian subsidiary, Djezzy, if it could find a suitable partner, say local media reports.
The comments were reportedly made by Batelco CEO Peter Kaliaropoulos, quoted in the Manama-based Al Waqt daily.
Batelco, which also operates in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Yemen, Jordan and India, recently said it would be ready to spend US$2bn on acquisitions in Asia or Africa.
Dejzzy is Orascom’s most profitable operation but the operator has been facing increasingly tense conditions in Algeria. Last December, it admitted to having held informal talks about a potential sale before it was slapped with a US$596.9m tax claim by Algerian authorities
