The GSMA trade body of mobile operators has elected Jon Fredrik Baksaas, CEO of Norwegian telco Telenor, as its new chairman.
Baksaas, formerly deputy chairman of the organisation, has served as acting chairman since Franco Bernabe resigned earlier this month, shortly after stepping down as head of Telecom Italia.
Baksaas, who has headed Telenor since 2002, will chair GSMA for the remainder of its current board term, which ends in December 2014.
Commenting on his new post, Baksaas said: “Connecting even more of the world’s population to the mobile internet is a top priority and, to address this, the GSMA will continue to focus on the evolution of our networks, the adoption of secure and interoperable new services and advocate for the needs of our industry to governments and regulators.”
GSMA general director Anne Bouverot said she is looking forward to working with Baksaas and the rest of the board “to develop global and regional programmes that will drive future growth and investment in mobile services …”
GSMA says it represents nearly 800 mobile operators worldwide, uniting them with companies in the broader sector, such as handset and device makers, software makers and ISPs.
