Cyprus has cancelled an auction for spectrum in the 2.6 GHz band due to a lack of interest.
There were no applications for the available four licences by the 25 September deadline, a spokesperson for the department of electronic communications confirmed.
However, local alternative fixed-line telco PrimeTel has applied to take part in an auction for spectrum in the lower 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2.1 GHz bands, the spokesperson said.
The ministry is currently evaluating PrimeTel’s application and, if it determines it fulfils the necessary criteria, a licence will be granted via a negotiation process rather than an auction. The licence fee will not be lower than the reserve price of €12.3m set out in auction documents.
If successful, PrimeTel, which operates as an MVNO in the country, will become Cyprus’ third mobile licence holder. The two existing holders are Cyta, which has a network partnership agreement with UK-based Vodafone, and the local unit of South Africa-listed MTN.
