British telecoms incumbent BT has entered into exclusive MVNO talks with wireless operator EE as it plans a return to consumer mobile services in early 2014.
The fixed-line telco, which earlier this year bought its own spectrum to bolster its wifi network, said it plans to use EE’s 4G network that was launched ahead of its rivals back in October 2012.
Rival mobile operators Vodafone, 3 and O2 were all thought to be gunning for the tender.
Previously, BT is understood to have had an agreement with Vodafone that included the provision of mobile services to its staff and enterprise customers, as well as scope for a possible MVNO.
But parts of that agreement were nullified when Vodafone bought BT rival CWW last year.
BT sold its mobile division several years ago to Telefonica, enabling the Spanish giant to break into the UK market with O2.
